Getting Social Phobia
Treatment
You maybe one
of the many people out there with severe anxiety problems
and are seeking some form of social phobia treatment.
After all, holding back on doing things because you are
worried about being judged or criticized can lead to the
loss of a social life or even a career.
Social phobias have only really been recognized as a common
disorder since the 1980s and it is believed that as many as 10
percent of people suffer from this in various ways. If you have
a social phobia you will be familiar with having the feeling
that people are watching and finding fault with you at work, at
the shopping mall or various other public places.
You may also have high levels of anxiety about public
speaking, meeting people and great sensitivity to criticism
from others. As a result of the anxiety it may be that you
experience physical symptoms such as sweating, blushing,
stammering and shaking when faced with a situation that makes
you worry a lot.

So what can be done to alleviate these problems, which in some
instances can be quite debilitating? There are a range of
social phobia treatments that can be tried and have been proven
to be successful. Some of these methods follow the medical
route, while others use mind over matter and relaxation
techniques.
If your social anxiety is really getting you down then it
may be advisable to see your doctor and get advice on whether
medication will help. They may prescribe antidepressants, beta
blockers or benzodiazepines but you need to be aware these may
have side effects and therefore the following alternative
treatments should be tried first.
One form of social phobia treatment worth trying first would be
regularly using relaxation techniques, which will help to bring
the mind and body in to state of relaxation. There are numerous
breathing or counting exercises that help relax you and ease
your anxiety.
Another technique is to get comfortable, shut your eyes for
five minutes and imagine yourself in an enjoyable place such a
favorite holiday destination. Try to imagine that situation in
as much detail as possible to help relax you. When you are
done, carry on with your normal activities.
It helps if you can incorporate some sort of routine into
your daily life that you can closely associate with that calmer
place you have imagined. That being said, be sure that it does
not involve alcohol, drugs or caffeine that may hinder your
sleep and decision making. Carrying a photograph of a loved one
or favorite place may help remind you how to relax.
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is something else worth
trying as this will help overcome worry and stress as a result
of social anxiety. This form of social phobia treatment will
offer coaching on how to retrain the mind and remove negative
thoughts and paranoia.
Patients can undergo CBT by visiting a therapist and having
one to one or group sessions. Alternatively there are self help
programs online as well as books. These sessions will help you
understand how certain problems can affect how you feel
emotionally and physically. The therapist will break down these
problems and help you work out how to change your thoughts and
behaviours.
As mentioned already it is well worth seeking help with
relaxation techniques or CBT as these have very good success
rates. However, if all else fails seek some advice from your
doctor on how to deal with this unfortunate problem.
